RESCUER

He turned on the vehicle. The warrior whooped as the shuttle gained speed. It was very noisy; the engine probably hadn’t been tended to for quite some time. He shouted at me, “What are you called?”

I didn’t answer him. I decided to start praying. Technically, Arava, as the High Vessel, was in charge of leading prayers in the ancient tongue, but I’d been taught all of the chants since I was a young girl. All the acolytes and priestesses knew the basic ones, and I decided to start the one to replace a vessel who had already ascended to the Shelshar, in remembrance of the fallen in the temple.

“What are you doing?” the warrior shouted at me.

I continued to chant.

He fiddled with the panels in front of him until loud music started to blare. Because I couldn’t concentrate, I had to stop chanting.

“Abductor! Why can’t you let me pray in peace?” I shouted at him in Common.

From the look on his face, I knew that he didn’t know for sure that I spoke Common until that point. We all did in the temple, even though it wasn’t our native tongue.

He grinned at me. “I’m your rescuer.”

I scoffed. There was no real reason for me to believe him.
